About the airport
The airport in Vilnius is the most important and the largest airport by the number of passenger flights in Lithuania. It was established in 1932. Initially, the airport was called Wilno-Porubanek. This name was taken from the name of the neighboring village Porubanek. At first, only domestic flights were operated from the airport, and in 1939 international flights were launched. Year by year, passenger traffic at Vilnius Airport increased. After Lithuania entered the Schengen Area in 2007, another new building had to be built so that the airport could meet the requirements of the Schengen Agreement. Now, the airport annually serves about 1.8 million people. The airport is located on the outskirts of Vilnius, near the A3/E28 highway. The distance from Minsk to Vilnius Airport is only 180 km, travelling time, exclusive of the border crossing, is about 2 hours by car. Low-cost airlines fly from Vilnius Airport to various cities in Western Europe. Thanks to this, Vilnius Airport is very popular among the Belarusians.
